About the Role:

 

Global BC is looking for a full-time Online Journalist to join the #1 newsroom in Western Canada. Reporting to the Managing Editor for Digital and Radio, the successful candidate will join the B.C. online team to help produce compelling, original content for our website and other platforms.

The role is a Group 4 position under the current collective agreement and will require work during early mornings, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays as needed. The position is based in Burnaby, B.C., and reports up through the online division of Global News.

 

You will contribute by:

 

  • Pitch, research, write, and publish stories reflecting the issues of the day and diverse interests of our audience to increase overall traffic and engagement on globalnews.ca
  • Contribute content such as audio, video and data visualizations for online publication as well as airing on broadcast platforms in line with the newsroom's integration goals
  • Chase breaking stories, advance existing stories and develop original stories that distinguish Global News from other media outlets
  • Monitor all news sources, including feeds, wires, and social media
  • Develop and maintain sources, especially in underrepresented communities, to develop enterprise stories
  • Liaise with various online and broadcast teams, including producers, editors, radio reporters, visual journalists, as well as third-party content providers, to facilitate the creation of unique and leading online content
  • Communicate with the main desk and coworkers on all platforms on breaking news, tips, story chases, and interviews

Skills and experience you will bring:

 

  • Post-secondary education in journalism is highly preferred
  • Five years of daily news experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, and a passion for online journalism and storytelling
  • Excellent ability to break news in an accurately and timely fashion
  • Demonstrated experience of accountability and enterprise reporting
  • Demonstrated experience in source diversity and inclusive journalism, with experience in Indigenous storytelling, and a commitment to continued learning.
  • Knowledge of the Indigenous populations and issues in B.C., trauma reporting, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action
  • Strong knowledge of B.C. news and history
  • Strong working knowledge of CP Style. Experience with WordPress considered an asset
  • Willingness to innovate, explore new ideas and acquire new skills
  • Experience working in broadcast news considered a distinct asset
