About the Role:
Global Kingston is looking for a part
-time Videographer (Video Journalist) to join their team. Reporting to the News Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for pitching, creating, and delivering quality news content for television and online. This role reaffirms our commitment to breaking news, community reporting, and digital-first approach to build the future of news. This position requires working a variety of shifts, including early mornings, evenings, late nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. This is a Group 3 position under the current collective agreement.

You will contribute by:

  • Daily multiplatform reporting of local news and community events for Global News Morning Kingston, CKWS News at Noon, CKWS News at Six, CKWS News at 11, and globalnews.ca.
  • Shooting, writing, voicing, editing and reporting local-sourced news for television broadcast and online.
  • Pitching, pursuing, and producing new and unique news stories that matter to the local community and beyond.
  • Initiating and developing story and feature ideas through contact development, research, and interviews.
  • Reporting live on-camera, both on location and in studio.
  • Monitoring all news sources, including feeds, wires, and social media.
  • Shooting descriptive and interesting video footage to enhance visual storytelling.
  • Chasing breaking news stories - including providing live coverage, setting up interviews for broadcast, and facilitating pictures and video for online coverage.
  • Coordinating updates for breaking or developing stories.
  • Publishing video content to our website and social media channels.
  • Establishing and maintaining a network of news contacts throughout the Kingston and surrounding region.
  • Creatively using production graphics and other visual elements to enhance storytelling.
  • Being a strong advocate, model and mentor for digital journalism and a digital-first workflow.
  • Representing the company at various community and charity events as required.
  • Understanding and adhering to Global News’ Journalistic Principles and Practices.
  • Backfilling other roles within the newsroom as appropriate (anchor, producer, assignment support, etc.).
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Skills and experience you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education in Broadcast Journalism or a related field.
  • Relevant experience in broadcast and online journalism required.
  • Experience shooting video, editing and writing news stories for TV broadcast.
  • Excellent news writing and storytelling skills.
  • Camera operation experience and familiarity with non-linear editing.
  • Strong on-air presentation and interest in on-camera TV reporting.
  • A demonstrable passion for current affairs and news, with a keen interest in developing skills to grow within the news industry.
  • Valid passport and class “G” driver’s license is required with a clean driver's abstract.
  • A knack for getting tough interviews.
  • Ability to effectively solve problems and trouble-shoot while dealing with the unexpected.
  • Ability to handle the demands and pressure of tight deadlines and breaking news.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced and highly demanding environment.
  • Strong communication and organization skills.
  • Knowledge of current affairs in Southeastern Ontario.
  • A positive attitude, strong team player, and a desire to collaborate in a multiplatform newsroom.
