Housekeeping / Laundry Worker – Valleyview Home

Part-Time

 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

 

This Unifor position, under the general supervision of the Environmental Supervisor, participates in the provision of housekeeping and laundry services in the Home.  Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the Home.



MAJOR TASKS:


Housekeeping:


Performs varied tasks to ensure the provision of the Home's housekeeping program for resident’s rooms.  Duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning and dusting floors, walls, windows, woodwork, furnishings, light fixtures and washrooms - including fixtures.


Carbolizes beds when requested or when resident moves.


Cleans dining rooms and serveries following meals.


Participates in the inventory of resident’s clothing, labelling same and tracing lost articles.


Verbally communicates and interacts with residents, supervisors, co-workers, family members, visitors and other departments.  Is pleasant, courteous, respectful and understanding in all communications and keeps resident information confidential.


Has a good knowledge of and complies with Fire and Evacuation procedures within the Home and all procedures designed to ensure the security and protection of the residents of the Home.


Performs other related duties as assigned.


Laundry Operator:


Performs technical tasks to ensure washing and drying of clothing is completed properly.


Sorts dried clothing and linens for folding.


Folds linen and clothing as per instructions.


Sorts and weighs the Home and resident’s laundry for washing.


Hangs all cleaned resident clothing in proper place on clothing racks.


Participates in the inventory of resident’s clothing, labelling same and tracing lost articles.


Verbally communicates and interacts with residents, supervisors, co-workers, family members, visitors and other departments.  Is pleasant, courteous, respectful and understanding in all communications and keeps resident information confidential.


Has a good knowledge of and complies with Fire and Evacuation procedures within the Home and all procedures designed to ensure the security and protection of the residents of the Home. 


This position must take responsibility for personal health and safety insofar as he or she is able under The Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations.  A worker must:

  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Act, the regulations and City policies.

  • Must use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn.

  • Report to his or her supervisor the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another worker.

  • Report to his or her supervisor any contravention of the Act, the regulations or the existence of any hazard of which he or she knows.

 

This position shall not:

  • Remove or make ineffective any protective device required by regulations or by the City, without providing an adequate temporary protective device and when the need for removing or making ineffective the protective device has ceased, the protective device shall be replaced immediately.

  • Use or operate any equipment, machine, device or thing or work in a manner that may endanger himself, herself or any other worker.

  • Engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct.

 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Secondary School graduation diploma together with related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  Must be willing to place the comfort, happiness and well being of the residents of the Home above personal consideration.  Experience in similar duties in a geriatric setting is an asset.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Successful completion of a police record check with vulnerable sector clearance.  Satisfactory TB documentation.

 

Remuneration: $24.37 - $25.20 per hour (2020 rate).
